uflg95 Aux. battery question
#1
uflg95, how did you hook up your aux. battery for your winch? I have a Warn a2500 winch also and have a hard time keeping the battery good. If I use the winch on a ride then I will have to charge it when I get home. I know have a second battery that I keep charged and would like to set it up on my Explorer but don't know how I should run it. Any help is appreciated.

I run an extra battery on my 2000 xplorer 400. I run it only to the winch. I run a duralast 1000 cranking amp battery. I make sure it's charged before i leave. I can run the winch non stop and it never runs the battery down. It also runs the winch much faster than it did with the atv battery.

I tried to use a small polaris battery at first and it didn't hold up. You can use just a 400 cranking amp battery and that should work fine. You can get one for about 35 bucks which is cheaper than the polaris battery. It does add extra weight but it's worth it. I mounted my battery in my rear box on my bike and just cut a hole to run the wires through. You can check out my pics at http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/jjtdiceman. Any more questions just let me know.

What I did was use the Diesel setup. I ordered the mounting hardware, battery tray, battery leads, and battery out of the sportsman. I also have a Yuasa quick connect carger that I use to charge it with. However I hooked the batteries in parallel. I have yet to have a single problem and have several customers that have the exact same set-up. I use my winch all the time and have yet to drain it with the new battery. Heck, I've tied the sportsman to the ground and lifted a '82 firebird (with no motor or drivetrain) off the ground. The winch was straining but it did it. I was impressed. I would agree not to use the reg. sportsman battery (part #4140006) for the extra battery, but as long as you stay with the Diesel auxilary battery or larger you will good to go.

uflg95, does your stator charge both batteries? Where did you mount your second battery? Last but not least can you give me more detail on how you ran your batteries in parallel? What I THINK I know is positive to positive on the batteries and negative to negative. Can I hook up the winch to either battery or do I need everything hooked up to one battery?
Weedy, I have had good luck with my explorer. It has never left me stranded and it's nice to have a quick mud machine.
Jon, thanks for all your help, your explorer looks great. I'm going to try to run the batteries in parallel if I can figure out how to do it if not I think the way you have yours is what I will go with.
Thanks for all the help and patience Jon and uflg95. I apperciate it greatly.
