whisky, i went riding with a guy from work this past weekend, and he was busting my a$$ about my scrambler 400. nothing bad, just goofing around, he actually lkes it. but anyhow, he even sent me email titled "he who rides an automatic" haha! well guess what, he found out this past weekend, that he who rides an automatic can smoke his 400ex. it wasn't a race or anything, but we were on a straight away and i took off. he said, "wow, you were flying, my quad won't go that fast" may be the rider, but who knows. wait until spring when i do my stage 1 kit! time to show show some banshees that an automatic isn't as lame as they think! i love my scrambler. had it in the snow today, awesome!

Thanks for the replies. I went by home depot to get a piece to cut plexiglas for my gps holder and I looked to see if they did have the shims, but they didn't thank goodness! I ended up after a business call stopping by a Polaris dealership in Dunn, NC, it's about two hours away from my house and talking with Al. I explained my problems about wearing through 5 belts, 2 were Dayco in the past 8 months and then I started to tell him about the way I ride and the mods I have done and he told me exactly what needed to be fixed. He said he has seen this problem and know just what to do. Then as I was finishing up talking to him I mentioned that I had 25" all around and then he said, he knew somebody down there that did the same thing and he said he had a real hotset up to make it really kick ***! So I am heading down there early Saturday morning to get the belt problem repaired correctly for good. As I was walking out I noticed a badass purple and yellow Scrambler 400 in a picture on the wall. I said, that's Jerome's Scrambler isn't it. Ya, you know Jerome, we do all his work. Well now I feel real good about bringing my Scrambler to them because Jerome has told me how great his dealership was, but I didn't know this was the one! Pretty cool!! Thanks again for all of the replies, BTW The belt is too loose and out of aglinment and they are going to change some springs around, install my roller clutch and mess with the rev limiter. When you install the roller clutch you shave a section of the old buttons off for support for the roller setup. It sits on top of the buttons and longer allen head bolts tighten it down and roller barings take the place of the platic buttons for the new helix to ride up and down on. It's pretty cool to take it all apart and see how everything works with each other and by change small thing it can make such a difference. I traded my suped up 97 Sportsman500 for this 3 month old 99 scrambler 500 and this is the way it came, all out of alignment, that's why I probably got the trade! Well it's going to be fixed finally Saturday! I let y'all know the out come,

Steve

I've just made a couple of corrections to my <a href="http://marina.fortunecity.com//victory/272/atvmaint/atvmaint.html">ATVMAINT </a>webpage.
The shop manual cost me $48.78 (in July 1998), not $40.78 as originally posted.

I also added clarification about using a carpenter's level for a straight edge; I use a machinist ruler (not shown in the photo) to measure the belt deflection.
The level serves no other purpose except as a straght edge.

The belt was unaligned and loose. The dealership in Dunn,NC hooked me up! The roller clutch is great! Now I think I should call my Scrambler a Screamin Bigfoot Scrambler because it is really Outragous NOW! It looks like I am going to be spending just as much on my scrambler as I did on my Sportsman, too many goodies to buy!!

I hate to bring this up again but by shimming the clutches don't you just put one clutch out of alignment of the othere on creating a longer distance BUT having a mis-aligned clutch? I always thought you would have to move the transmission or engine to get the proper center to center and deflection?

thanks

JOHN

Nope the shims do it. You need to have your belt aligned properly. There is an alignment gauge that can be purchased if you think you need one. Dealers should have one also. The belt has been on our 400SS for over a year now and no wear because it is properly aligned. If the belt wears by 1/16 - 1/8 get a new one because is hurts performance. If there are severe problems in high-powererd built units or very old units, it could be caused by the motor mounts. I'ver replaced mine with a higher durometer rubber because of some problems we were having with belts being eaten every week. Went thru 4 belts before we discovered the culprit which was engine flex because of torque. We exceded the limits. It happens.
