My brother and I are buying Quads (a replacement for me and a first for him) and we were set on the Xplorer 400 until we rode (and drag raced) the Magnum, Sportsman HO and Xplorer together at the dealer. Before I rode them separately and had difficult telling whj The HO IS faster followed by the Magnum and then the Xplorer. The difference in price will be right at $1000 dollars since we are buying two together so I think we will opt for the Sportsman or Magnum - lean towards the HO.

I know the Sportsman is hard on brakes but is the Magum much easier on them?

Is the Magnum a better choice for deep water riding?

We have haggled a price where the Sportsman is only $200 more than the Magnum.

Without question, for two hundred dollars buy the Sportsman. The IRS is definately worth it!

Weedy, what kind of price did you get? I got my 2001 SP500 HO for $7000 OUT THE DOOR (including helmet, ramps, winch and goggles).

If you can get the HO for $200 more, that is your only option left.
The Magnum is a good quad but pales compared to the HO in ride, power, resale, and almost every posible thing you could compare.
The Magnum is also a dated machine That has changed little since it came out. Or are you talkin about the RMK version?
Even if The Magnum is the RMK, unless you live with the mountain goats,
Get the HO.

If the drag race was important, then you might want to think about spending $400 of the $1000 you will save, buy a clutch, pipe, and filter, and jet kit for the Explorer.
It would be a LOT faster than a HO could ever go.
The Polaris 400 2 Stroke can make 50 HP with a small amount of work. The HO motor will never make that kind of power.

Megacrash

I agree with you but it seems once you modify the two-strokes you give up reliability. I have owned two strokes forever and I think I am going to switch to the tourquey/quite four stroke.

Just kiddin, good luck with it.
Im still a little too young at heart for the 4 stroke band wagon for now, but will eventually give in.
