In 98 I bought a 97 500 sportsman leftover for a good deal well since then a friend of mine bought a 99 and says I do not have the same motor as his.I can not find my manual but my friend says I have a 498 and his a 499 is this true and if it is the much of a differance between the two?I do know the Polaris Big Boss 6x6 use a 498cc Sound like a bother for polaris to make a new engine thats only 1cc larger.

According to the Polaris specs, *both* have 499cc
According to the Polaris service manual "1996 - present" (1999) all have 498cc.

Interesting - 1998 specs in the manual show the sportsman 500 as 498cc and the Scrambler 500 as 499cc -
but *both* show bore & stroke to be 92x75!

Analysis: Both machines are the same size.
The 1cc difference is the choice of someone to either round-up or truncate the actual displacement of 498.57192

Im looking at a 1999 Dirtwheels buyers guide and it shows the Sportsman as a 499cc 95mmx84mm and the polaris Big Boss and Ranger as 498cc 92mmx75mm.I thought the three shared the same motor?
