I am living in Austria and ATVs are very hard to get in Europe. I found two cycle-stores in Germany which have a Polaris Magnum RMK and a used Kawasaki KVF 400.

Which ATV would you guys suggest me to buy? I need it to carry material to a mountain cabin.

By the way: know what the Polaris Magnum costs in Germany? 21995,- $$

Good eh?

So please help me to make the right deal. Is yamaha or Kawa the better brand ß Or Polaris or Bombardier? Or any other brands like Suzuki or Honda? I need a rugged one, good quality.

thank you in advance....

1 US$ is 2.13 DEM (today)

1 DEM buys the same over here than 1 US$ in the US. So it is 1:1 if you know what I mean. 1 liter milk is probably 1.30 $ in the US. Over here it is 1.30 DEM for example.

THe ATVs are expensive because:

- curent exchange US$ to Euro$
- transport
- toll
- grey import (that means that European dealers cannot buy at the factory, they must buy at one importer and this guy buys at a common US-dealer...
- ATVs are mostly unknown in Europe
- and we need a licenseplate (hell of a procedure over here...), mud flaps, H4 headlights, blinkers, breaklights, other breaks and this and that plus, plus, plus on the ATV to get a permit to operate the ATV
- sales tax which is in Germany 15% in Austria 20 % and in Sweden for example 25%

By the way: gas is 2.30 a liter . 1 liter is a quarter gallon.

Beautiful, ha?

All I can say to that is D@MN.
The RMK will suit you best I think.
The RMK cost $7299 over here!
I thought $10000 was espensive for an ATV.

Yes, be glad to live over there.....

You guys can afford the toys to play with - but we have the freetime you d need :

Standart is:

6 weeks paid vacation, 14 salarys a year, almost full health coverage by state insurance blablabla and a lot of other benefits you guys dont have over there.... (I was living for 3 years in CA myself...)

It s just the question what system is better. You got the toys and the big country with still lots of space for riding ATVs and snowmobiles (which we do not have) but we got the time to play with the toys ;-)

Well, I couldnt figure out whats the better choice. When I first moved to CA, I thought that I have as much time to explore the country then I have over here. Oh hell, I was working 60 hours and more a week and on sundays I was curing the left overs of my hurting bones. ( I am a cabinetmaker)

We have just 35 or 38 hours a week. Thats it. So, you guys put in at least 60% more hours/ year than we have to.

So, please believe me: The work ethic of Europeans compared with all the social benefits and the comfort and your big country would be the perfect solution. Hopefully Russia opens soon, than we have an even bigger playground than you guys have.

So long

Martin

Go look for you a good Honda. Its as rugged as you will need. Any of these manufacturers will make you a good bike for your needs, but in the long run, a honda engine will hold up for years and with minimum maintenance. For your situation, I would figure that replacement parts are also expensive, and if you plan to own this for a long time, stay away from automatic transmission quads. Belts wear down over time, and a regular geared transmission hardly ever goes out for people who just ride normal (not racing quads).

Yes, you might be right. Thats what all bikers say that Honda engines are the best. The problem is just I have no idea where Honda ATVs are available over here. As far as I know, Honda doesnt sell them to Europe, so I d need to buy it online in the US or CAN.

BTW: have you got any idea if there exists a good online store where I can buy ATVs online? I have friends on the Eastcoast as well than on the Westcoast (CAN too) where they could ship it to. From there I d be able to export it to Europe as a present from friens. (saves 22 % toll)

I found a dealer in Austria who has the 500 from Arctic Cat.

Whats the better brand Arctic Cat or Polaris? Cat is a little more expensive than the Polaris - is there a difference in quality or so?

www.discounthondaparts.com is the first ATV OEM parts place I can think of. They sell parts for all brands. rittercycle.com deals in Polaris a lot, as well as others. They can get about anything you need.
For aftermarket stuff, try hpd.com or hotseat.com or ronnies.com or even denniskirk.com

I think anymore, the quality differences are narrowing significantly, one is about as good as another. If an auto worries you, I got 4500 miles out of my first belt. It didn't break, but was getting shabby looking. The manual transmission rarely goes bad, but if the clutch goes bad, you are talking $600 instead of $60. The clutch SHOULD last the life of the machine if kept adjusted & driven normally. However, the new Polaris machines have a lifetime belt warranty, too. Don't be afraid of the Cat's at all, they seem built as good as anything.
