Hi guys, I'm new here. I've been looking at used machines and wondering what the difference is between the older sportsman and the H.O. If it's just power output, can an older (say '99) model be upgraded to match the newer machines?

Any info you can provide is appreciated.

Really the biggest difference is that the H.O. breaks down 20% faster than the non-H.O. Good luck

There are quite a few little things. The pre-98s had u joints instead of CV joints (CV joints a big improvement). Otherwise, not anything major.
The HOs are supposed to have better brakes & rotors (about time) as well as a much stronger steering stem bushing (ditto) and better tie rod ends (heim style instead of ball-joint style).
Also included are Stainless brake lines instead of rubber, and the list goes on, but again, it is a lot of little things, not any one big thing.

Polaris HO's advertises a 20% power increase over the non HO model Sportsmans.I have talked to several owners of BOTH these ATVs at my local riding area. They tell me that MAYBE there is a 2-3% differance in the power between the two ATVs.No where near the 20% that Polaris advertises.

I really would'nt go thru the trouble to make a non HO Sportsman a HO.There was a guy in these forums that tried that and alls he gained was a lighter wallet.

Utility wise it is not that noticeable, however line them up in a 500 ft. drag and the HO walks on the non-HO. If you run hard go for an HO, if you plan on just cruising through the woods and working it, the non-HO will suit your needs just fine.

The whole speed thing is over rated. The HO makes more horsepower at a higer rpm. The non HO makes it's power at a lower RPM translating into more low end grunt. The REAL reason to buy a HO is the upgraded steering and brakes. Weather it's worth the extra 3 to 5 hundred bucks for the HO is a wallet call. My .02$
