gears in xpedition/mangum
#3
ok, well the gears in the rear end on the mangum are at a certain ratio to generate tourk now whats the difference in the 425 xpedition gears compared to the mangum any one know, because an xpedition can only do 58 mph where a 500 mangum can do 63 mpm so i think the gears must be lower, is it worth the swap?
thanks

I take it that your dad has the mag 500, I cant see needing any lower gearing out of the 425 than 1st gear. Or for that matter the mag in low gear in 4wd. Whatever he is trying to pull it must be big.
As for the 425 going 58, thats streching it a bit. I've clocked my on my gps and the speedo it at least 5mph off.

Here is how your dad gets lower gearing on his Mag500. Go to your dealer and ask for the two final drive gears inside the gearcase from a 325 magnum 4x4. They will probably run around 60.00 to 70.00 for the pair. It is a direct interchange that will definately give your 500 the needed lower gearing. I know, because I did it on my old 99 Mag 500.
You remove the PVT and inner cover, also remove a couple of brackets on the gearcase(you do not have to remove the gearcase itself, it stays in the machine), unbolt the cover on the gearcase, pop it off and make the change on the gears. Very simple process, recommend you get the gearcase cover seal installation tool so that you don't mess-up the seal when reinstalling the gearcase cover.
This really made a differnce on my 99 model. Especially since I put the 26" Mudrunner tires on it. If you have the stock tires on, it will be even better as far as gearing! I liked that machine alot however this new RMK Magnum 500 that I now have is a real sweet machine and it comes stock with lower gearing already!
Give it a try. It will work. I can get you the part numbers if your dealer for whatever reason doughts you. I had this swap confirmed that it would work by the parts techs at Polaris before I did it.
Good luck!

Jerry,
What are the part numbers to the gears and the tool. I am interested in making the swap in my Magnum. When I put the 28's on, it could definitely benefit from the lower gearing. Also since these are the final drive gears in the tranny what effect did it have on high range? Is there a reduction in the top speed?

I will get those numbers for you tomorrow and post them from work. Hopefully by 9:00 am west coast time. And yes it will affect your top end it lowered mine about 4 mph. We're not really in to all this high speed stuff out here. We need gearing and horsepower for climbing hills!

The P/N for these gears are:
Top gear 3233708 36teeth
Bottom gear 3233709 48teeth
As for the seal guide tool....well...evidently there isn't one, I only suggested it because it was the one part of this task that was the most frustrating in trying to keep the garter spring in the seal when reinstalling the case cover. I must have been dreaming (wishing) that here was one, sorry.
