98 Xplorer brakes & Demand 4X4 over ride

You have to take the caliper assembly off, just like a car, then the pins will slide out on one side. Slowly squeeze the piston back in with a pair of channellocks, put new pads in, re-install caliper.
Question 2 ....I'm waiting to hear about myself. I do not think the 4x4 works as an "on demand" system. Put the quad against a post in 4x4 and throttle it....it'll spin all 4 wheels at once.

As far as breaks go, I haven't had to change them yet, but DaveB already answered that one anyways. Now, for the 4x4 question. I really don't understand what you're talking about there cuz on my 98 Xplorer, when I push the 4x4 button, that's when the front tires engage, I never have to wait for it. I know this probably doesn't help you, just my experience with my Xplorer.

Had the calipers off once but could not figure how to get pins out, guess just needed to push harder. May be corroded in as they are 3 years old. Break out the McGyver spray.
About the 4x4, I have read on here that the rear has to turn about 20% faster then the front before the front will kick in "on demand". I was wanting it so that the front is locked before hitting the goop, like the 660 grizzly type button if I can figure out where to tap in. Have not tried it against anything to see if front wheels spin right away.
Getting 26" 589 M/S tires for the back tomorrow hope to improve my swamping ability.
