I'm looking to move from the trailboss to a 4wd machine and am interested in the 250/300cc 2-stroke 4by machines that polaris has made the past 4 or 5 years. Anyone with experience on these have some input for me? Also, would look at the 300 arctic cat if the right price. Thanks for the help.

Don't know much about the 300s, but the Xplorer 250s are amazingly capable quads for being 250s. I don't know of anyone else's 300s that will do all they will. Also, they seem about indestructable. Maybe not as much as the legendary Fourtrax 300, but they ride better, and for a 2 cycle that engine just keeps going, and going.

I have a riding buddy with an xplorer 250 and it is a great machine. It goes where the rubicon, ranchers, kodiak, etc go. I would love to come across one of these for a good price. I wonder if the 300 is as reliable as the 250 has turned out to be. If anyone knows of an xplorer that is a coupla years old, i'd be interested in buying.

They are indeed a reliable little machine. For the money, they are hard to beat. The only one that has come back to my shop for repairs was for a blown exhaust gasket.

I don't think that Polaris ever made a 4x4 with the 300 engine. They only used the 300 engine in the 96-99 Xpress, as far as I know.

Elroy, they made an Xplorer 300 4x4 for several years. Looked the same as the current 400s, just with smaller tires and no radiator.

According to KBB, they stopped in '99.

Thay also used the 300 aircooled engine in my 95 300 2x4. It looks like the old trailboss but has the 300 instead of the 250.Tough little engine. They also made a 300 4x4 that looked like a 425 magnum but it was dark green with a brown seat.

Sparkys, I believe the dark green/brown seat 300 4x4 that you speak of IS the Xplorer300.

However, to respond to the original question, if you can, I'd definitely see if you could find a used Xplorer400. You can't beat the 2-stroke power, great ride, and having low range is always a plus. I have a '99(have 1800 miles on it, I believe), and love it. I beat the thing to crap, ride it in mud, ride it in snow, jump it, and it puts up with it all. The only thing I've had to replace are:
Drive belt- after 1500 miles, it was time for a new one.
Air filter- replaced about the same time as the belt, got a K&N
Primary Clutch Spring- this didn't NEED replacing, but the power sure hits harder with a white instead of blue/green.

Like I said, got nearly 2000 miles on it, and have had minimal problems with it. Just gotta grease the chain and zerks occasionally, and you'll be all set. The 400 is (obviously) more powerful than the 300, and I sometimes wonder if it may even be more reliable than the 325 and 425 4-strokes...

I'm glad I don't know everything. The world would be a boring place.

I'll have to check into these machines at work today. I can honestly say thou, that I have never seen or heard of them. Then again, I have only ever seen one other 300 Xpress in my life besides the one I own.

Heh, wouldn't it, though?

Yeah, a friend of mine has one... I think its a '97, but I'm not sure...
In fact, he just scored the piston on it... so I think he'll be upgrading to a 700... quite the step up...
