Maybe you guys are missing the point. My example above when referring to 1LB RM=7LBS unsprung weight was just there as food for thought, albeit an accurate figure. So 8OZ of RM would theoretically = 3.5LBS. I wasn't implying one could remove 1LB off the flywheel and retain the starter.
The flywheel revolves as RPM's build. If it weighs less, it will rev quicker which is directly related to throttle responsiveness and torque curve as DaveB stated. To retain the starter the wheel is shaved from the outside (side facing the cover). For the race shave the ring gear is scrapped and it is shaved and balanced from the top giving it a smaller diameter.
When the ring gear goes, so does the starter as it is engaged by the starter. Without it the starter is useless.
