hey all,
i would go as far as saying, any of the top 3 4 wheelers can win quad of the year. polaris is the reason there are 4 wheel independant suspencions, as well as a host of other firsts in the indistry. the 700 is just the newest example of there leader profile. as for me, i would not buy a sportsman 700, couse i just dont trust there reliability, but thats just me. i think its a hell of a quad, and i cant wait to meet more and more of them on the trails, couse there a challange to beat, but i will, lol.

Great machine, but I would rather have the 650 V-twin.

If you look at all the past winners, you will see that all of them have been good quads that have made alot of people happy.
Past Winners

1997: Kawasaki Prairie 400 4x4

1998: Honda Foreman ES

1999: Bombardier Traxter

2000: Yamaha Kodiak

2001: Honda Rubicon

However this years winner (sp700) I believed had the most competition for the award then any of the other years.

The ATV Mags shootout was definitely the most accurate. They broke it down into 15 categories and rating it in a point system. All the other mags shootouts were all generalized, so that you had to read between the lines to see a winner. And the only compared them in a few categories, and they didn't really give a clear winner. If I'm looking at a s/u quad and there is a shootout, I want to know what it can do in every condition, not just speed and wheeling. Also in the shootout, the 700 and 660 was very close so either quad would be a good choice.
