When ever it breaksor when you take the cover off and it has bad spots in it.

Their really isn't a suggested interval for changing the belt. A new belt should measure 1.188" wide. Polaris says to replace it when it gets to 1.125" wide. You only get .063" of wear on a belt. The only way to really measure it is with a dial caliper. You should also take the belt off periodically to check for cracking. What I mean by this is if you take the belt off, bend it backwards and look at the ribbed section of the belt. In time it will begin to weather check. When you bend it backwards, look between the ribs for cracks. If it has any, it would be a good time to replace it. Also, look for burnt spots on the belt, if it has any you should replace it also.
I replace mine about twice a year. This is because of my aggressive clutch and riding style. You may be able to notice that your engine has to rev a little higher before it engages. This could also be a sign that it is getting thin.
You will be able to notice a difference when you have a new belt installed. It is really amazing just how much of a difference that .063" makes. .063" is not very much but it is a world of difference in these Polaris clutches.
