I have a 400 Scram 4x4 (bought on impulse) however I always liked the Sportsman models. I like going fast and playing in the mud. So I've been thinking of selling the Scram and getting the SP700. So the question is, would you keep the Scram or get the 700?

I guess I'm confused here. Isn't the 400X a fast 4x4 that would be a good mudder?
Apart from the chain and the lack of 200 LBS, I don't know why you would want to.

It's not that the Scram is slow or can't mud. It's far from slow. I've never had a chain 4x4 and no low range for the thick stuff. I don't know if I limited myself by getting the Scram. Small mud holes are no problem it's the big ones I'm worried about. When I go out and see a mud hole, I'm not the guy that goes around, in fact I'm ussally the one that see's how bad it is first. So I was thinking, when the spring mud comes, will I have to go around instead of threw. I know the 700 is alot faster then my 500 non ho, but how is it compared to the Scram 400. I know in the mud it will smoke the 400, but will I be disappointed with the 700 in speed. I tried out the 700 when they first came out and was not impressed with the take off, but was never able to take it past that to see how the mid range does. You can't do much in a parking lot. So the point is, will I be disappointed with the 700 after having the 2 stroke power of the 400?

The Sp700 with some clutch mods would make you a very happy man.IMHO It would me anyway.

GE 4x4,

If it were my money and I was in your situation, I'd get the 700. If for no other reason than the ground clearance the 700 offers. Not to mention that it comes standard with good mud tires. The wimpy take off can easily be cured with a clutch kit from Aaen. They are even offering a 38mm carb for the 700 too.

Mike,

Even thou you do not hold the DirtWheels mag in high regards, I see you still read it.LOL

GE4X4,

Seriously thou, The SP700 is quite a machine. It does have a very mild mannered clutch. I am sure with a differently tuned clutch, it would completely change the machine. It does not have a snappy take-off unless you punch it but I'm also sure Polaris set up the clutch so that it was like that intentionally. Polaris was even rumored as to saying that "with the SP500 clutching on the SP700, they could not keep the front end down." I personally believe that.

This would be a hard choice for me also. These two machines would be my first choices. I already told you that I'd have a SC400X if the wife wouldn't divorce me. The SP700 really impresses me even thou I'm a "sport" man at heart. The SP700 just has so much potential.

If you just flat out want a racer, stick to the SC400X. If you want a very powerful 4X4 with excellent suspension and ground clearance, get the SP700.

elroy,

Now that I've had a chance to ride the new 700 (thank you by the way) I still think it could use some different clutching, but not for take off. It does pretty good as it is in that department, but still could use a little bit of improvement. The 700 main flaw is that the EBS comes on too strong for my taste. I've ridden the 500s with EBS before and they were nothing like this. The deceleration when letting off the throttle practically threw me over the bars! Yeah, it's that strong! The Sportsman 700 has enough power to spin the rears maddly on take off even in sloppy, muddy conditions. Now that's with the stock tires. If they are pretty good mud tires, I'd hate to see what great mud tires would do. All in all, it's one sweet machine! If I was in the market for a monster 4x4, that would be the one.
