Electrical/Lighting Problem
#1
Hello All,
Hoping to get some bulb numbers for the lights on a '96 Magnum 425.
I had a power surge to the system due to a dead battery and fried all the bulbs.
I was able to get that the tail light # is 1157 from search.
I still need the main headlight and the "fog lights".
I understand that the lower lights have some kind of weird connection and have to be purchased from the dealer.
At 20 bucks a piece and me being a cheap SOB I'm wondering if anyone has been able to replace them with bulbs I can buy at NAPA.
I was also told two different stories from two different people at the same dealership how to check the system for a fried alternator.
Replace battery and start engine.Attach voltmeter and read voltage.Rev engine. If voltage rises, alternator is O.K.
The other story I heard is If the voltage jumps past 14.4 after reving the engine, the alternator IS fried.
Anyone know the REAL story?
I would check the bulb numbers myself, but I keep my Magnum at a cabin 30 miles from home and would like to be armed with all the parts before I leave to do the repairs
Thanks,Joe

I cant remember the bulb # but take one of your old ones to walmart and get them cheap. That is what i did the only bulbs i got from the dealer were the dash lights(little Bas###$$ to get out)and the main head light bulb.I agree the $20 apiece for a bulb is too steep.

Thanks for the reply,
For the record,in case anyone else needs this information in the future,I did figure it out.
I ended up having to make a run to town while I was up there but here's the numbers.
The single headlight ended up being a NAPA 9003(6 bucks). It's halogen, but same voltage, amperage, etc. The "fog lights" were #894 fog/side lights(7 bucks each).
The tail light is an ordinary 1157 (1 buck)
It kills me that the dealer said that I could only buy the fog lights from at a dealer. The 4 bulbs would have cost me over 60 bucks at a dealer.I got them for 20.
I did not fry the regulator either. So,life is beautiful.

The voltage, wattage, amperage,I think even the lumens were the same.
There were other bulbs of the same style with different numbers that can be looked at.For example, several stores I went to were out of #894 but had #891 which was identical in appearance.I went to the counter and had the tech look up the stats on each bulb.Everything was the same except the brightness wattage. The 894 was 70 and the 891 was 55.I am quite certain that if you had the tech look it up,you could find a bulb with a higher wattage yet.
Good luck,Joe
