As some of you know, I have been in the middle of a frame-up restoration on my 300 Xpress. I have the frame painted, the front and rear wheels on it, the motor and tranny in it, new TM34 carb on it and RCR pipe on it. Saturday at work, I became impatient and wanted to atleast hear this thing run again(its been over a month). Besides that, I still wanted to run oil injection so I had to modify my carb to be able to do this. Well, to get my injection system bleed, I had to get it running also. I made up some premix and feed it into my carb by an I.V. After about three revolutions, it fired right up. Even thou I haven't been able to dial in the jetting, the jets that were in the carb were close enough for it to run. Man does that thing sound cool. The one mechanic was about as pumped up about it as I was. The jets that came in the new TM34 were a little to fat for it to be real responsive but it atleast would run and idle. I'm still waiting for my silencer so in the mean time I got a YZ250 FMF Shorty on it right now(re-nicnamed the "Stubby" We sponser a motorcycle race team and they have a pile of these silencers laying around. It actually looks really good on there. Good enough that I may end up using it instead of a regular Polaris/RCR silencer depending on how it makes it run.
I just thought I'd let you all know how I was coming along. I know progress is slow but atleast I'm making progress. My shop has been pretty busy lately but it is beginning to slow a little. Maybe this will give me a little more time to get some more work done on it. I've been lucky to get an hour a day to work on it while still answering phones and waiting on customers.

elroy,
That's great news! Now you have to wait for the weather to get decent to dial in the jetting.
On a side note, I got a call from the EX yesterday. The starter on the kids TB (that was making funny noises) finally gave up the ghost. I'd bet a dollar to doughnuts it's the bushings in the starter going out. I replaced the brushes and seals on it, but that was it. I forgot the Clymer manual when I went to camp to replaced the brushes. Well, time to let the pros down their way handle it. The armature on the starter was in good shape, just a little black from all the dust from the old brushes. It needed sprayed off with contact cleaner, but I didn't have any. I wish I would have let you guys handle it. My Ex brother in law is taking it to Indiana, Pa to get it worked on. He has to go get shots for the dog over there anyway. I'll be up this weekend with the silencers.

Glad to hear you have it almost back together. I know what its like to have something apart and to have to wait for parts or the time to work on it.I guess I am lucky because I own my own shop so I can work on my bike when its not that busy or evenings too.Anyway I hope you have better luck jetting your bike than I'm having with mine.I still have a lean spot around 1/8 throttle and i figure the only way of getting rid of it is to try a new needle in it.I even took off the UFO yesterday , to see if it was the problem, and it wasn't. The leanspot is still there.I really should try to get it jetted right on the spot and then re-install the UFO after it is dialed in without it. I can hardly believe the difference in the throttle response of the UFO.When I tried the bike yesterday it seemed real lazy and accelerated quite slowly until I put the UFO back on.They really do work, they just can be hard to jet.I am going to try to call Lonn Peterson again tomorrow and see what he thinks.I think my biggest problem is that the carb came off a stock 400 scram which is a reedvalve motor and I put it on a piston port motor that has been ported with a pipe and the airbox has been modded too.My engine has to have a different fuel curve than the 400.This means it will need a different needle and needle jet too.I just don't know which ones to use.
I actually tried to shave my needle down today, just slightly and it seemed to help some but its still not quite right. The bike still seems extremely sensetive to any change in the air temp or even the engine temp.
When I first got on it I thought I had it cured but then after it got good and hot it started to lean out a bit again.
How hard was it for you to mount the carb on your bike? Do the choke and throttle cables fit right on? What about the airbox connection?Do you know what size jets came in it?
I just hope your luck is better than mine. I am getting tired of thinking I've got it cured and then after it gets hot, it starts leaning out and detonating.I bet you I have had the carb off about 100 times now.
