400 Explorer front-end maint.?
#1
My riding buddy has a 95 400 Explorer. We were looking at the front housing for an alamite or lube oil opening and couldn't find one. He has an occasional knocking sound coming from the left front, but the u-joint seems to be OK. He says it seems to be in the upper part, and he's never done any PM to the front other than the usual greasing at the tie-rods, etc., and lubing of the chains. Any suggestions appreciated.

oh there is greese fittins on the front encentric you just have to look harder or it could be broke of wich will make it harder to find the clunking noise could be bearings going out in the front encentric also check it out greese it up and run it

The greese fitting on the front encentric is on the right hand side (when facing the quad) and roughly 8:00 when facing it. Dont miss the other encentric on the left side of the quad located around the front of the floorboard. You can see it while peeking in thru the wheel opening. There is also another fitting that some people (I know of 2) seem to miss - its the one near the footbrake where it attaches to the frame. It can be reached through the rear wheel opening with a long rubber hosed grease gun. The fitting is angled towards the back of the quad and is difficult to find at times.
Coastal Maring (my Polaris dealer) gets 300's and 400's in quite often from people who fail to grease up their quads. It only takes a few minutes to do it once you remember where they are located it will saye you BIG $$$ in the long run.
Hope this helped.

Loyal, you were right! We washed the 4whlr off, and, low and behold, there's an alamite we never knew existed...front end ain't knockin' no more...my buddy was impressed with the forum (your)responses...now he wants to know about your reeds...are they worth it? can you tell alot of difference? His motor has just been rebuilt and bored slightly, he installed a K&N and that made a bit of a difference...just wonderin' how much difference the reeds make...and thanks again

Todd,
Glad to be of help. As you know there a lot of people here with brains to pick when you have problems.
I went with the Reids as a cheap hop-up. Installed at the dealer they were <$90. I knew zero about re-jetting so that is why I went to the dealer. I have had them a while now and have noticed a difference right across the board . . . essentially the throttle feels "crisper".
I also run a Splitfire Plug and Polaris Synthetic Injector oil. She is one quick puppy, and lots of torque for towing and slower trail riding.
If I go to any other upgrades with will probably be a larger carb and a pipe. No idea what brands yet . . . but $ is limited cause we are building a new house.
