Your talking about the kind of winch thats on every boat trailer. YOu could check at a marina. However it uses a crank which needs turn the full 360 degrees. I dont know how you would mount that type on the front or back and be able to use it. We have those composite storage racks so I would be afraid to mount them on top of those. They would probably crack when your using the winch. My
dad actually has this set up. The winch from an old boat trailer he had. His polaris atv is an old
94 polaris 300 non named atv and it has the old metal storage rack. He mounted this kind of winch on a metal plate that he then bolted on to the front rack right on top. He believes that he can winch both forward or backward if he needed to.
Why dont you just be like the majority of us and buy an electric warner winch. 2500 lb. if you wish.

Sparke, use the "Search" function and you'll find out more than you every really cared to know about winches.
Regarding your bud at the marina, I have no idea why the lusts for a ratchet; most hand winches have them, I'd think. As for electric winches, such as you'd find on an ATV, these products use gear resistance and shunt braking; supplemented by internal spring brakes (standard, SuperWinch ATV2000; add-on, T1500; extra-cost option, Warn A2500 and A2000).
By the way, the ATV2000 and T1500 have identical motors and geartrains; the A2500 and A2000 likewise have identical motors and geartrains.
By the way II; 900 # pull is inadequate for ATV self-recovery in many situations I've seen; 1500 # even ain't enough; a ****** block multiplier is required when genuinely stuck.

I just recently bought a warn 2000 at Tractor Supply for $299. That is not a bad price at all. You can also get them on ebay for $249 or so, but I figured by the time I payed shipping it would not be all that different.

I feel that the Warn 2000-2500 are a couple of the best on the ATV market. I would not have gotten the winch if it had not been for the $100 price that the AC's come with. I do not use one enough to really need one. It has only come in handy one time for me. Go to the links at the first of ATV connection and you might find a good deal on one of those sites.

Through the advice of the dealer, I purchased the Rule 3300 lb winch, and have been very pleased with it. The outer gear housing on the warn winches is made of plastic, which can strip. However, the Rule's outer gear housing is made of metal - much better. On my sp 500, I have had it stuck to the point to where my 3300 lb winch almost stalled, so I cannot see how a 2000 lb or 2500 lb winch could have gotten me out. The winch cost me $460, which was a couple hundred more. But, the way I see it, how much is it worth to you to have a $250 winch that won't get you out when you're 20 miles from the house and it's getting dark? Hope this helps.
