Hello, I am new to the forum and it looks like a dandy! I just bought a new 500ho (silver w/rawhides) last friday. I have only 2 miles on it due to all the snow at home. Is there anything special I should do for break in and when do you recommend the first oil change? The dealer said 100 miles or 50hours. Thanks in advance looking forward to searching all the previous threads. Marty

My dealer said 100 miles. But, he also said don't baby it too much you have to get the engine warm. He said don't run at top speed for long periods and vary your throttle.

50 hours seems like way too long.

I believe that it is after the first 100 miles or 10 hours, whatever comes first and not 50 hours like sisu asked.

My owners manual said 20 hrs and I think or 200miles which ever comes first. I have 20 hrs on first with a little over a hundred miles. Didn't you get an owners manual?

Keep in mind that it comes from the factory with a break in oil/additive that you want to "work" in the cylinders. Early change out can prevent the rings to not seat well. Follow the the MFG's guidelines.

Guys RTM! Two tanks of gas, 20 hours, or 200 miles. Change the oil and she's all broken in. I have about 4 more gallons of gas to go and then change my oil.

Ride you quad just like your going to after break in. Trail riding is the best break in. Full throttle runs are okay as long as you don't hold the top speed rpm's for a long period time. Use LOW range and HIGH.

The first 10 miles are the hardest on a new motor and belt. Ride on old logging roads or woods trails where you can get a lot of air flow across the engine. After that forget about it. It will take another 1,000 miles to fully losen up. My last HO ran the fastest after about 1,500 miles.

My dealer said 750 miles. The 10 hour checkup does not include an oil change. I'm going to do mine at about 250 miles anyhow, just to get the stuff that's in been in the awhile, out.
The filter catches all of the crap, so don't worry about metal shaving running around in your engine.
