I have a 400 with concentric drive, i am contemplating removing the starter and having it rebuilt. i have read some previous posts but none really covers my quad. can someone give me a run down on the procedure for r&r of this starter. Also the problem is sometimes it wont engage, the newest problem is a awful grinding noise when quad does start using starter, it quits within 5 seconds after starting but that cant be good for it. Thanks in advance. By the way, this is my fiance's quad so gotta get it fixed right and soon!!!

Odds are it's the starter bendix, not the starter motor itself. Regular draining of the flywheel housing after deep water riding can prevent this. It's a drain-plug on the bottom of the recoil housing. Also make sure your pull start handle is always fully seated.

To access the bendix, you'll need to remove the recoil housing. 7 or so bolts (it's obvious which ones) then a couple of raps with a soft face hammer....or my trick, pop the seat off and, using a short piece of hard wood (stump of a broken hockey stick) tap on the tab on the top back corner. It's easy if you don't run the airbox, but if not, might be worth the time to remove the airbox quick. The bendix is the small spring loaded gear. Lube it well, but not too much, the excess might spray all over your stator (behind the flywheel).

Remember to use a bead of silicone on the pullstart cover when re-installing it.

Good Luck,
Ken

Ok, curiosity was killing me, i just took off the recoil cover. My first question is what crack addicted fool came up with this design? i cant believe the location and set up of this starter. second question, the starter is definetely messed up. you can grab the "snout" of the starter shaft and move it quite excessively in all directions. the spring seems to be in there and working.any ideas? rebuildable? trash? new pull start- only quad? Thanks to all in advance...

Check your local auto electric shops. I found a re-manufactured starter bendix gear for $50.00. They may also have the starter motor, too. Bring the part with you before you buy. They are "auto" electric shops, you know. Good Luck.

Odds are the piece you are moving all around is the starter Bendix, not the starter itself. If you can see a big spring on it with a gear, that is the bendix. Something totally seperate from the starter.

I believe Ken's right. Just the tip of the starter shaft sticks out of the starter motor housing. The bendix has a large gear that rides on the starter shaft gear and a small gear that extends out to the flywheel when engaged. Go to partsland.com for an exploded view. The symptoms you described sounds like the starter bendix failing to engage at times and failing to disengage at other times (that awful grinding noise is the bendix gear chattering on the flywheel teeth). A good cleaning may fix your problem if it is not rusted too badly. On the forum are posts telling you how to take the bendix apart. Some of the bendix parts are replaceable. Good Luck.

O.K. thanks for your help. Yes it is the bendix that is bad , i'm going to look into having it rebuilt. Next question is -- When replacing the re-coil housing, there is a pin that sticks out of the re-coil, and there are several holes in the flywheel that the re-coil could fit in. Does it matter which hole it goes in??? thanks

No you don,t put it in any hole you just put it back on. That pin just holds the spring in the recoil housing. Hope this helps.
