I am currently in the market to purchase a used 4x4 machine with a minimum of 350cc. I have come across a couple of 1996 Polaris Sportsman 400 4x4s and was wondering if they are a good machine. I have heard some negative things about the drive system on the older Polaris models.

Don't know a lot about the 400, I have a 96 500 and it is great, still running everything (factory stock) except the brake pads and no problem, some have complained about the weak u-joints I have had no problems.

Personally I would hold off and get a shaft drive model. I had a chain drive 400. If you do decide on it, remember to factor in the price of 3 chains and 6 sprockets into the cost of the machine. I found myself replacing a lot of parts on it.

They are tough machines, but take a lot of maintanence. There are 3 drive chains, and 6 sprockets to take care of, plus chassis greasing.

If you can live with that, the performance is impressive, and they DO hold up well if cared for.

I have one and it is the BADDEST 4X4 I have ever ridden they do require alot of up keep but performance wise you cant beat one.I piped and clutched mine and I love it.You know that it is a 2stroke which means you may have to do a topend sooner than a 4 stroke.

You mention weak u-joints. I have a 96 500 sportsman that has a slight shake in the steering. I have replace the u-joints in the back and aligned the tires and that solved most of the problem, but the shake, although less, is still there. Any suggestions???

The slight shake or wobble is usually the tie rod ends. When it get too bad replace them till then live with it.The old style wont last a year or so but the new style will last longer.
