Just bought a used and stock 99 Sportsman 500. Very good shape. I'm not one to leave anything stock though but my experiences are more in the line of working on motorcycles. I figure this shouldn't be much different to upgrade.

I've read a bunch of the forum posts as well as researched a ton of websites with aftermarket parts for performance mods. Am looking for those mods that can be done at little cost and with little work at this point. There's always something a person can do before tearing into the motor and doing port work, etc. Can't seem to find out what those cheap and easy mods are though. Don't see any info on this site so I'm posting for suggestions. For the most part, I'm looking for bottom end grunt and snort. Not much into getting more speed out of the machine but want the power in the lower and mid-range. So . . .

1. I'm assuming that a person could buy an aftermarket slip on to bump horsepower a little. What brands are people using or liking? Am I going to need headpipe too? Is this just a simple slip on, or does some rejetting need to be done? I don't know if these things come lean or rich from factory.

2. I know I could drop a K&N in. Plenty of experience doing that to bikes so I don't need any info on that unless someone thinks its absolutely necessary with a new slip on.

3. I've seen the larger mm carb for sale at an aftermarket site. What kind of bump would I get from this?

4. Do the H.O. cams just drop into my 99? Or are there aftermarket cams that are better. What kind of bump are people seeing from this?

5. Any restrictors or wires to cut for some added boost?

6. What kind of clutch upgrade am I going to need with even the smallest bump in horsepower? In other words, how strong or week are the clutches in these things. I've got the EBS which is going to be effected too, correct?

Thanks in advance,

Glad to be on this forum. This seems to be the best place to get info that I've found to date. Any other Polaris sites that I should check out? Any other Polaris or just ATV Minnesota clubs or members around?

well the cam is a good place to start. cost about 160 for factory ho. 250 for aaen hp cam for race only. head needs major porting, is very restrictive. k+n yes, carb yes, enlarge inlet on airbox to at least as large as the carb. ive tried dg pipe and it fit like crap. sold it and went with ho head pipe with gutted muffler. aen makes a slip on but your head pipe on a non ho is kinda small. clutch kit is a must. i would recomend hpd if you dont want to tinker. heal clicker will give you more with a little tuning, changeable weight so if you get more power later. dont worry about your ebs screwing up clutching doesnt affect this. take your plastic stopper out of your clutch and sand about 3/16 off of it so that the clutches can shift out all the way. good for a couple miles per hour for free. if useing stock pipe tapper all pipe edges where they are welded. mess with your clutch center to center and shims in your secondary untill you get the belt to just come out even with the cord and still have the corect center to center this will give you more low gear. if done right you will loose some top end with this but is worth it especially if you use big tires or like to ride weelys.
give me more questions and i will help where i can.
dont read my mo below as i have changed most of this.
