I have a totally stock 00' SP 500 with about 500 miles. It has never had any problems and has never been touched or opened up in any way (other than grease and oil changes). Recently, it started to "creep" in gear. I got nervous when I read in the burning belt post that if it creeps, the clutches may be mis-aligned. Should I open it up and check the belt and clutches? It did start after I just did a bunch of slow rock crawling riding, but I don't see where that should have done any damage.

Thanks

Don't worry too much, it could just be a worn belt, although 500 miles isn't a whole lot (my '98 Sport was still on the original belt when I sold it this year). Deffinatly open her up and check things out. It probably wouldn't hurt to take it to the shop and have the clutches cleaned and checked out too...just a little preventive maintenance.

Let us know how things turn out.

its an easy fix mine did it to Take the clutch cover off and look at wher the belt is ridng in the primary clutch, if it is touching the sides of primary it is an alignment deal. the most common problem is the secondary clutch is needing to be shimmed out What I did was take the bolt out that holds the secondary on and pull the secodary off the shaft behind it there will be a washer(shim)take that to your local hardware store and tell them ya need 4 of those, start with 2 and the orignal and put the secondary back on and the belt back on and run it drive it a little and see if has stooped doing it. Mine took three plus the stock shim and fixed the problem right up, its a very easy repair but it makes a world of difference

Also check the primary clutch face(s) for a groove. There should not be any grooves, only smooth aluminum.

The problem comes with using high gear for slow speeds and the belt cuts a groove in the clutch face.
