There have been a few occasions, while out riding, that my quad will start to smell. It smells like something is burning. It happens when, for example, I am hill climbing and my tires dig in and and get stuck. Then I rev the engine and the engine RPMs go up, but the tires dont move. Is the smell I am experiencing a belt burning? I know something is getting hot, just not sure on what it is. This has happend two times now. I try to avoid doing it because obviously its not a good thing. I am just wondering what it is that I am smelling? Any ideas?

If the engine is revving and the tires are not moving(in gear of course) you are burning your belt. And you could possibly groove the clutch surfaces.Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Unless the tires are realy bound up you should not be slipping the belt, but if you do it just once, long enough to get some smoke and lots of burning rubber smell, you need to take a look at the belt. You may have burned a flat spot in it and if so it needs to be replaced. Lots easer in the garage then out on the trail.

On the two occasions that this happend, the tires were completely bound up, incapable of turning. The first time this happend was my second day out on the quad... pretty much brand new... it smelled bad and I saw a "little bit" of smoke.. not much... about a month has gone by since that time, and now it happend again (saturday). Again, the tires where incapable of turning. This time just a small, no smoke... because I learned from the last time this happend.

Sound like a flat spot on the belt? the scrambler is like 5 weeks old... only rode it maybe a total of 10 to 12 days over the course of a month or two.

Bring it back. It should have a full warranty on it still. Pretty sure polaris has a standard 6 month for all new machines. They also have belt warranties. You could have also damaged your clutches.

Alright... I suppose I better bring it back to the dealer (even though its 4 hours away!!)

I am going to have them look at the clutch, the belt, and the chain/sprockets (for a non-related ticking sound I hear). I hope all that is covered under warranty!

I was hill climbing and i got to the top and all fo the sudden i quit moving up and starting digging deep into the dirt. Next thing I know I am totaly stuck at the top of the hill. I couldnt go back down the hill due to how steep it was and the possibility of rolling the quad (wich was almost garunteed). I had to keep trying to work my way out of the dirt... it just wasnt happening.. tires wouldnt move, the bad smell came, then a slight amount of smoke... at that point i got off the quad, had a friend help my get it out and ran down the hill along the side of the quad holding the breaks... it was a mess, but I got out of it ok... well other than that smoke/smell

the other time this smell happend the rear tires were wedged inbetween a tree root i beleive... i dont really know what happend that time... i was just stuck.

The chain ticking I guess is due to my lack of greasin the chain... thats my fault... oops. Live and learn.
