My 2000 sportsman 500 It has a catch in it when in neutral when going east and west with the shifter like when going into low . Sometimes in low I get completely lost in that gear. I can be in low and I can move the shfter to make it look like its in reverse. Do I need to replace something. Also in there oil in the shifter box by the gas tank..

I'm getting lost in your post. Could you state the question again?

Try the easy “fix” first. Your shift rods (from the shifter box to the rear gear case) are adjustable for proper shift engagement. A bell crank end may be loose (happened on my ’01 6x6) or they may just need to be adjusted due to wear. Check for loose ends first (they’re like a tiny tie rod end. You have four, one on each end of the two shift rods). If the ends are tight you’ll need an adjustment. I’m not going to write a page on how to adjust the linkages. Ask your dealer or have him do it. If that doesn’t fix it take some Advil and check back with us, not necessarily in the morning.

The shift box on the side of the gas tank in theere a lube in that? It just seems like there is a catch in the shifter. when in neutral going left to right it gets caught and is ruf not smooth moving.

It took me a second to figure out what you were describing. Like Floodrunner advised, it sounds like your shift linkage is out of adjustment or your linkage rod ends are loose/worn. Kinda sounds like the high/reverse shift linkage is not centered in neutral when you attempt to shift into low. Check that linkage rod first before you mess with the low linkage rod.

And yes, there is fluid in the shifter box. I don't have my manual in front of me. So I can't tell you what to put in it.

Good Luck.
