Hello, first time on and have some questions. I live in Oregon and ride on everything from tails, snow, mud, and sand. Most of the time I ride trails and sometimes they get pretty hairy. I own a 2000 xplorer 400 4x4 and the guys I ride with have a Grizz 660, Prairy 650, 2 sportman 500 HOs,Raptor and a Kodiak 400. I have never had much problem going threw the rough stuff, and can go pretty much anywhere the other bikes go. But when it comes to fireroads and riding on the sand dunes about the only thing I can beat is the kodiak and that is just barely. What can I do to speed things up but not mess up the bikes slow technical abilities? I know this question has been asked over and over and I could do a search, but I thought I would throw out a first time post and see what happens. Any sugestion would be appreciated, except telling me to buy a big bore. Thanks

The 400 is very receptive to Mods. A pipe and clutch kit would probably be your first step. Check out these suppliers.

The Hot Seat unit would need an aftermarked Spark arrestor to be USF approved, plus I belive they are loud.
The RCR kit would probably be your best value (More Bang for the Buck). Super customer service.
The Aaen kit makes great power on my scrambler but I have never seen or heard any one with there kit on the Explorer, but same engine.

Like I said take a look at there web site and request some catalogs.
Also pick a supplier and try to stick with them, don't jump around, makes tuning much easier.

is it the 2 stroke xplorer? how much do you want spend?
you might change the reeds first, boyesen petal power reeds or v-force 2 if you want spend for the whole cage (really worth it!),a wiseco piston is always a good mod but don't mess with it if yours stock one is good yet, pipe and clutch kit WILL greatly improve your 400 performances but at more noise expand, and you'll loose some low end if you wanna know but engine will rev near 7000 rpm as well (more top end).it all about yours need, new billet head also help (more torque)but you can have shave it for yours need a less cost instead bying new aftermarket ones.

I am in the process of buying a 95 xplorer w/blown motor. I have bought a motor from a 99 sport to replace it with. The mods I plan on doing are a Ritter cycle stage 1 kit w/torque pipe, reed spacer, v-force reed cage, 38 pwk carb, solid motor mounts and oil injection block off and steering post upgrade. I am looking to race it in the utility class next year in the Oklahoma cross country assoc.
