Default Are there any difference between the 02 700s and the 03 700s?

Not sure why this is, but my friends 03 SP700 is faster than my 02 SP700 and I put an AAEN clutch kit in mine? My friends 03 SP700 is completely stock. Sure, initially mine pop's him out of the hole but only momentarily, then he slowly but steadily pulls away. I think I'm OK with the fact that his machine is faster than mine but the real kick in the *** is the fact that not only is his machine faster but it gets far better fuel mileage???... Go figure.
I'm well aware of the fact that no two ATV's are alike and that some are just plain faster than others of the exact same size and make, but this fuel thing baffles me. Are there any difference between the 02 700s and the 03 700s? Perhaps one of you ATV guru's can help.

I ride with a friend who has a SP700. He had a 2002 and it was stolen. He just got a new 2003. He said that the dealer told him that the 2003 were 60lbs lighter. I have not been able to find this out for sure for myself yet. I do know that they went to "Lube For Life" greaseless bushings, and now there are only four grease zerks on the whole quad. They also changed the water pump housing which fixed the coolant leak problem. I would like to find out what else they changed on the 2003. He said that the 2003 did have more power, but again, I haven't been able to find this in print anywhere. I figured he was just bragging. Maybe it does have more power, or maybe it is just lighter, either way that would make it a little faster than yours and also improve the gas mileage. I would like to know what they did to lighten it up though. Anyone else have any info on this new 2003 SP700. I might look into buying one, but I will have to trade my pride and joy Raptor

Area51,
How do you like the vortex throttle? Would you purchase one for a utility quad?

Heatmiser,
I wouldn't purchase one for a utility quad since the throttle application is so instant. With the Raptor it is great, since you are usually either on or off the throttle, but for utility quads where you are doing more technical ridding, a smoother throttle input would be much better. If you want a twist throttle, you can buy them with a slower ratio, something like a 3/4 twist would probably be much better. The Vortex is a 1/4 twist, and the slightest movement of the throttle brings lots of response, which would make it to hard to control in the slow, rough, tricky stuff. Hope this helps.

as for lightening maybe they just got the weight closer to whats publicised. Its common practice to fib a little. so if they lightened it 60lbs and it still weighed more than claimed weight. they wouldnt advertise the lighter bike lest their deception be revealed. the new rx1 sled comes to mind. im of the opinion that wet it will weigh over 800lbs even though they claim less. 800#s in 30" of powder = $10k high performance brick.

As far as the weight of the SP 700 goes, I was able to find this in the March 2002 issue of ATV Magazine for what it's worth. It was their shoot out between the SP700, and the other big bore 4x4's. In that shoot out they said that they weighed each machine wet, full of fluids and ready to ride. The SP 700 weighed 782 lbs. They then subtracted out the weight of the fluids for a "corrected" dry weight and they came up with a dry weight of 742.9 lbs for the SP 700. This was much closer to the clamed dry weight than the other machines that were tested. Interesting, for what is worth.

I will look into it. I did not realize there was different throttle responses.

Hey Muder,
I think my '03 beating you is getting to you. It's ok, I'll let up on the gas a few times to make ya feel better. hahha
I don't think the quad is any lighter, we/ve looked them over and haven't found any big differences. There are less grease zerks, 6 in total, not 4. I think the top end is just because my atv may have a leaner fuel mixture, increasing my fuel mileage. If they have changed anything, the've kept it a secret from us, but why?

There are many issues that would cause a year old quad not to be wite as fast as a brand new one. The belt has some wear after a year and might have a little glaze on the surface. The clutch sheeves are probably shiny and smooth compared to the slight texture than have when new. The spring in the primary and secondary have weakened slightly causing the quad to upshift quicker which puts more resistance on the engine at lower rpms.
These are just some of the normal variables that will effect your quads performance. In your case, the clutch kit may be more for low end torque than for speed??? I know that to be the case with alot of clutch kits that the mudders intall to help them turn their big tires.

[]TextThere is no difference between the 03 and 02 SP 700'S both are overweight
and under engineered , they are strictly utillity machines at best.
If you want to keep up with the pack buy a Grizzly, they are set up to go right out
of the crate, no screwing around with clutch's just gas and go BABY!
