Scrambler 500 2wd/4wd problems
#1
i have a 00' scrambler thats totally stock. My problem is with the front end, the 4wd works great, but my problem is in 2wd. If i'm spinning on a very slippery area in 2wd, at a certain rpm the front end engages just for a second and then lets off again. this also happens when i'm wheeling at a certain speed, and it scares the hell out of me. this only seems to happen at a certain speed and only on ocasion, but i was just wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them before i take it back to the dealer. Thanks all!!!! ride on.

I just bought a 500 Magnum. While going through the video and the owners manual, this problem was addressed. You'll find it in the CONTROL AND PARTS FUNCTION section, or under DEMAND 4 DRIVE in the index. Reads as follows............
DISENGAGING WHEEL HUBS
When backing uphill while in Demand 4 Drive and then going forward downhill, one or both hubs may remain engaged. If one or both hubs remain engaged, they can be disengaged by stopping, shifting to and moving in reverse. Then procede forward again.
You can tell if only one front hub is engaged if the handlebars pull to one side. If both front wheel hubs are engaged, steering effort increases but remains balanced from right to left, and the vehicle speed is somewhat restricted.
!!WARNING: If both hubs were engaged and only one released during operation, loss of control could result. If you experence hub engaging symptoms, use the above disengaging technique before proceeding. Failure to disengage front hubs as directed above could result in sevre injury or death.
If hubs remain engaged after following these instructions return the ATV to your dealer for service.........end quote
In the video, it states......"stopping and changing gears, going from forward to reverse, may cause this". They show to turn while SLOWLY backing and once stopped to turn the handlebars from side to side a couple times. This should correct the probem.
hope this helps, Jim

I had the same problem and E-mailed Polaris and this is what they said to do!!
Thank you for your recent e-mail to Polaris Industries Inc.
The problem you are describing is common. Bring your ATV to your
dealership and tell them they need to adjust the "rolling torque." They
probably over torqued the front hub and when it spins it creates a magnetism
that causes the front hub to engage. If they have questions they can call
our tech service department.
Thank you.

THANKS FOR THE INSIGHT, but what about when i'm in a wheelie? there is no tire spin, but rather just ground speed.

When I had my hub apart, I over-tightened the hub nut. If it's not EXACT how it should be, it will have a mind of it's own. Sometimes it would never got out of 4wd, in 4wd or 2wd, and sometimes it would kick in at random. Before I got it set right, once I was doing a big slide when it kicked in and almost threw me off!
This never happened before I worked on it. Once I got it right, no problems.
