Default GPS Suggestion Sought

I need a GPS that records and retains top mph. The one I'm using now only reads current. As speeds get higher that becomes impractical. My next set of tests will be on a fairly fast machine and I just don't wanta be trying to look down and focus on tiny numbers at the speeds I'll be running.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I have a garmin e-trex. It's the yellow one that I always see on sale at Dick's Sporting Goods. It has the feature you are looking for. I've used mine to do exactly what you are doing, checking top speed. It is very accurate as well. I've used it numerous times in cars to see how it matches up with the speedo. I just saw it on sale for 89 bucks.

dfischer,

I have a garmin II plus. Most of the GPS' will do what you want. You can buy them a Walmart and get a pretty good price. You can also use some software called OZI Explorer to download "tracks" of where you rode and print them onto topo maps. It's pretty cool!

I know the Magellan I bought @ walmart (bigger display) for $150 didn't do it, so they don't all record and retain top speed.

Gld to hear the e-trax's do, as there is a full line of those...

Thanks guys.

I upgraded from a Garmin GPS III+ to a 176. Nice large screen and has all the features I wanted for trail and cross-country riding on my ATV and snowmobile.

Yes, yes, I've often considered the 176c, but its not quite portable enough. I'm jealous. Actually, for the mapping role I'm thinking PPC + Anywhere + CoPilot. The little "throw it in your pocket" garmin's, if they retain highest speed, seem nice.

Thanks all!

I also have the garmin e-trex. It does retain top speed as well as average speed, distance, current speed etc... I got mine at amazon.com for $117.00 shipping included.

I've got the Garmin Etrex Legend and love it. I also ordered the Topo CD with the GPS and have been making my own trail maps. It will tell max speed, stop time, average speed, etc.. It was well worth the 199.00 and I had a manufacturers rebate for 50.00 with it also.

I have an eTrex Vista and love it. I also have a Garmin GPS 2+ and love that one too. Both have the "Max Speed" feature that can be reset. The GPS 2+ has an awesome display that can be toggled verticall or horizontally depending on the application. It has handlebar mounts available. Since I really have use for only one GPS, I will offer my GPS 2 Plus to anyone interested for $60 plus shipping!!! Check out the specs at garmin.com. It looks just like a GPS 5 Plus but doesn't have mapping...

Howdy Dave!

OK, I'll look at the site. Call me sometime and we'll chat. Did you get the number OK?
