a lot depends on the stator in the motor..if it has a charging coil, you may be able to take off from there..some of the smaller briggs do not have them, (ie edgers) most of the electric start models have a charging coil.. it all depends on the application the powerplant came out of. as far as lawn tractors with briggs, I have not seen lighting coils, but have seen charging coils, so the lights are run off the battery, the charging coils charge the battery back up. if you luck up and find one that has a lighting coil, and decide to go without a battery, be aware that the output is dependent on engine rpm.
