how do i fix my starter?

i have a 99 scrambler 400, and have been having problems with my starter not releasing from the fly wheel(?). i need to know what is involved in removing the starter and fixing the problem? please help. thanks...

Its probably your starter drive that is the problem. You would need to remove the recoil and the flywheel to replace it. I have done one 400 Sport that had that problem and that solved it. The only problem for you would be the cost at about $120.00.

Scramblin,
Pull the recoil housing off, take the bendix out, and if the gear teeth aren't damaged you can disassemble the bendix, clean it thoroughly, and re-assemble it.
They are expensive to replace, so I would suggest the clean and re-install method first. If all else fails, see if they sell just the wear parts for the bendix...

Read this stuff at this site scramblin man and then let me know what you think...seems it may be a problem that all of us Polaris riders are going to suffering from sometimes...seems doing a better seal will be the cure to the problem...let me know what you think...oh yes the site is:

I just want to check and see if people check there recoil housing for water when they have be in real deep it can be drained bye removing a bolt under the housing That is just FYI
