They are great machines but need lots of maintanence mainly due to the 3 chain 4x4 system.Just check it over to see if it has been taken care of and greased on a regular basis.Expect to have to put on new brakes,tierod ends,battry and do a complete fluid change on ecerything.Oh yea if the cv boots are leaking that is trouble.And the first thing you need to get is a service manual . As for a good price average is $2500 in great shape(well cared for)$3000 rough shape not much.Expect to put $200 in it on oil change and brakes.

The springs I put in match the pipe that I run.On a stock 400 if you just put in a Polaris white primary spring it will help you exceleration and not hurt your topend.On the tires mine are the stock size but more aggressive tread and they do fine.I didnt want to go bigger because it puts more stress of the drive train and i still strip rear hubs every now and then.
