Default xplorer rear brake on left lever

I'm in the process of splitting my brakes on a 95 xplorer 400. i have the left (stock) master cylinder brake line ran directly to the rear caliper. i disconnected the rear line and master cylinder line from the valve block and connected them together. i need to be able to lock the rear brake. i have bleed the line - alot- they are still not that great but the foot pedal will lock them up. i'm going to get some new pads - current ones have about 40% left. Do i just need to keep at it or what do i need to do, does it have anything to do with not using a valve block? need some help.
thanks
hunt
