Front Springs on a Sportsman
#1
Last week I asked if the Sportsman dives bad on the front and everyone said no ,but I am reading a lot about the heavier springs for the front that people put on...so I am a little confused ..I was wonderind why people put the heavier ones on is it because it dips bad???or something else...Thanks

My 2002 500HO sagged badly in front and would bottom out easily in moderate riding. I tried stiffer springs from Polaris but they were an inch shorter which made the initial sag even worse. The 500 didn't bottom out as easy, but the ride was harsh. The best solution would be preload adjusters like on the rear springs, I can't believe this simple feature is not standard equipment.
My solution was a one inch thick preload spacer placed under the springs. You can use a short section of pipe or similar item. I used a hockey puck with a two inch hole drilled through center. You will need a way of compressing the springs to install them with the spacers, but other wise it's a simple fix.
The front end sits higher now, it rarely bottoms out, and the ride is still plush. Cost: $2, plus labor

I put a set of springs for a 6X6 in the front of my 01 500 HO. Real simple job. It sits up better than the stock springs. I could not stand the front end bottoming out. It rides alot better and handles weight on the front real good.

Most people put the heavier springs on to compensate for the weight of a winch or plow.
The 700s come standard with somewhat stiffer springs, so it doesn't bottom nearly as easily when you put a winch on the front and go off-roading. I agree, if they would just put an adjustment on the front, like they do in the rear, that problem would be solved.
