Scrambler 400 question!
#1
Ok..my cousin has a 02 Scrambler X 400. he has a clutch kit, FMF pipe, K&N air filter and a jet kit. My brother has a 02 Scram 500. When they race my brother will pull away from him top end. THey're about side by side till my bro pulls away. I would think the 400 would be quicker!
SO, im thinking its the way he has it jetted. Would 124 main sound good? I believe this is what he said he has. ALso its about 0 to -15 degrees out right now..so its pretty cold. ANyways, the bike has power, doesnt seem to be missing, just doesnt have the power i would think it would. I think he said it HAD 119 jets in it...so with the pipe and fitler he went to a 124. Would this be right? OH we're at sea level here..( i can see the ocean out my window!)

Also, FMF does not have a clutch kit for those. They run at the same rpm as stock, so I would think you need an agressive clutch kit setup for a stock pipe. A stock main jet on the models down here is a 240. With the weather up there, it would need to be at least a 280 or so. Recheck those numbers on the jetting. Remember, the top speed of the 2 machines will be about the same unless you change gearing, which is hard to do on a 4x4. Tuning it right will make the 400 get from A to B faster, though. Bubba

I will get him to re-check the jet numbers..thanks..also he said he does have a clutch kit in the bike...not sure of the type, but it is there..
I know stock for stock the bikes would be about the same, but with the pipe, filter and clutch kit, i thought the 400 would eat the 500!

Adding to what Bubba said, FMF is known to be crap for Polaris'. I'd put that thing on Ebay and get a pipe from HPD or Ritter and get clutch kit recommendations from whoever you buy from. Once dialed in right, the 500 should be no match.

Yep, I heard the same thing about the FMF pipe on Polaris's. I have an Aaen top-end pipe on mine and a 500 doesn't have a chance against me. Of course I have other mods, but the pipe helped alot and to have a clutch kit that is designed to work with the pipe is a must. I have also heard great things about HPD's pipe, so... IMO I would also get rid of the FMF and get a good pipe from Aaen, HPD, Ritter.

NC, I have the Aaen top end pipe on my Sport trail bike, and the HPD trail pipe on mywife's scrammy. They are both trail ported (of course), have the pump gas heads, reeds and a different silencer. The Aaen pipe pulls hard just like the HPD one. The only thing is the Aaen pipe doesnt turn quite as many RPMs as the HPD (6250 to 6750), and that would affect top speed by maybe 1 to 2 mph. But the performance seems very similar.Bubba
