Default Sticky Situation Scrambler 4wd

Have a 2002 scrambler 400 4x4. When I was in 2wd and and gave it a bit of throttle my front right wheel started to drive. I read in another post that if you put some kind of synthetic oil in the hubs it will eliminate this sticky hub problem. It was also -15 celicus (or about 7 degrees farenheit) would this have anything to do with the problem. This is the first time that it has happened, the quad has not been used very much since it was bought new so I'm not thinking any of the parts would be worn out yet. Any suggestions about the oil, the temp, or the scrambler would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem with my scrambler the dealer said replace the oil and if that does not work replace the spring in the hub. I bought the oil but have not had any time to replace it.

I think you are saying you are in awd when you should be in 2wd? Is that right? If so, your armature plate in the hub is probably maganatized. Change the armature plate and I'd probably change the spring around the bearing pack. Total of about $5.00 per wheel. It is very simple to. You might just want to try and change your fluid first, but I am betting it is your armature plate.

I have a 2000 Scrambler 400 4x4 and mine does the same thing in the cold. It only seems to happen when i'm riding in snow and my front wheels are packed. I think the cold contracts the tolerences just a bit and makes the front engage intermintantly. It sucks when you are doing a donut in the snow and then your front end engages violently, OUCH! I've never had the front ends apart myself but the oil was changed by the dealer. Running a lighter weight oil that doesn't turn to molassas in the cold probably can't hurt. It has been very cold around my house this winter(-10F to +20F) and when I ride I just keep it in AWD so it doesn't engage when it wants. This has never happened to me in the spring or summer. It probably wouldn't hurt to take your machine to the dealer and get the clearances in your hubs checked. That will be my next step if this keeps happening to me when spring comes. It was fine all summer so I HOPE this summer will be no different. 2-STROKE power forever, Eh!

Actually, on the 4x4 models, there is no grease in the bearings. It gets it lubrication from the hub fluid. You can use the Polaris hub fluid or get a good synthetic ATF type F fluid.

As the hub oil ages, it gets thicker. Cold weather aggravates this. Your first step should be a change of hub oil. Use either Polaris hub oil or Mobil 1 SYNTHETIC ATF fluid, type F.

I agree with Farmer, follow instructions on changing hub fluid, and replace with Mobil1 synthetic ATF fluid.

Does the Mobil 1 have to be type F or will the Mobil ATF synthetic fluid do the trick
