Are all 500 H.O cranks the same for 2001?
#1
I have a 2001 Scrambler 500 4x4 and the crank sheared off on the magneto side right after the timing chain sprocket retaining nut. I am looking to get a new crank for it. Polaris told me that the part numbers for the Scrambler 500 HO and the Sportsman 500 HO were different. I can get a remanufactured crank for a Sportsman but not the Scrambler. The difference in price is half for remanufactured vs. new. Does anybody know if they are the same crank for both machines? And if they are different, could you tell what the difference is?
Thanks,
Mike

So, who at Polaris told you they were different #'s??? Your shaft vs. a 2002 SP H.O. are exactly the same from what I see here and here. If your dealer told you that, you need to do yourself a favor and get another one that is not a crook trying to make a penny off of your breakdown.

Thanks for the info on the cranks. I compared all the part numbers and they are all identical between the two machines. I brought the schematics with me to Polaris and pissed their sales guy off, but I did get to see the part numbers. Apparently they changed from the 500 to the 500 HO between 2000 and 2001 so I have to call Polaris with my VIN# to find out if it's an HO or not. The sales guy is also looking into having my crank rebuilt but I don't know if they will be able to fix it considering one side of it is broken. I don't know if they will have all the parts to fix it, but if they do then the cost is just to rebuild it ~ $350. Then I know it's the right crank.
Thanks again for your help!

Man, I hate to see those people get pissed when you show them proof. LOL According to the links I posted below, at that site, the change was made between 2001 and 2002 with those cranks, so you still may be in the same boat, but whatever you do, don't let them rip you off. It would be ni e if you can get it re-built, just keep your fingers crossed. Glad I could help.
