Default Tachometer on 95 Sportsman 400

Has anyone succesfully used a analog tachometer on a Explorer/Old Sportsman 400? I did a search back to 2000 on Tachs, and I know many of you have used a SunPro Mini tach or something similar on Scramblers using the Yellow/Red wire, but I cannot seem to make this work on my 400. I have a Equus Mini Pro Tach, which is basically a rip off of the SunPro, and I have tried the Yellow/Red, the Yellow, the Yellow/Brown, the Red, and the Red/Black, all of which come off of my stator, and none of them give me the proper reading. Also, I need to have my switch on 8 cyl just to come CLOSE to the actual RPM. When switched to 4 cyl, it shows I am idling at 3000, and as soon as I give it some gas, the needle pegs at 8000. Can anyone give me any ideas? Do these tachs not work on the 200watt stator on my machine? I would like to get a tach working so I can set up my Heelclicker kit. Thanks......

It should work on 4, look at my pics, I have the Sunpro tach. You may have blown it somehow. Can you turn the face of the tach and does the needle move with it?? If it does, it is toast. Do you notice it doing crazy stuff when you turn the switch on and off?? It is toast, I would get the Sunpro and be done with it, 35 bucks!! Just, be sure to seal it up good with silicone.

It does not do anything crazy upon the turn of the key - needle just moves slightly, and once started, it is showing my idle at 2000 RPM, and soon as I give it gas, it jumps to 6000, and if I give it more, it pegs at 8000. Also, I tried rotating the tach, and the needle stays at 0, where it always is. This tach was also $30, and I thought it would work. I just do not want to spend another $30 on the SunPro and find out the new tach does the same thing. Anyone else with any ideas?

Yep, sounds funny to me. You definately won't hit 8k rpm. How exactly do you have it wired. PM me if you want to.
