Just picked up a used 95 and the Front wheel drive is not engaging. I read a post on how it's supposed to work with the system not engaging until the front wheels are spinning slower that the rear wheels. I'm not exactly sure how this is supposed to work.. Does anyone have any idea where a person should start? How does the system sense the rear wheel slippage?

Also does anyone know how the Speed Limiter works? In reverse the engine sounds like it's missing til I hit the override then look out!!!

Thanks in advance.

I have a 98 Magnum 425. I am no expert on the front wheel drive, but I will tell you what I know.

First, put the entire machine on jack stands, engage the 4wheel drive switch, start the engine, and put the machine in gear. The rear wheels should begin to spin and if the front wheels drive is working correctly, the front wheels will spin. If not, you have a problem. I would start with the switch first as it is probably the easiest fix. After that, I don't know.

Second, the rev limiter in reverse engages when the engine reaches 2500 rpm. This is to prevent you from flying backwards out of control. If you what to go faster, hold the override before hitting the gas as the machine will take off very fast if you hit it while you are going backwards.

I would try to get a service manual from the Polaris dealer also, they may have a troubleshooting guide in it.

MagnumMudMan:

Thanks for the info. Never even thought about putting it up on jacks. I'll give that a shot as soon as I can. I ordered a manual for it yesterday, should be in before weekend.

Can't wait to try this thing out in the mud.

Kanard dont forget that there is no 4wd in reverse unless you hold the button down also.

the shifter switch has been causing most problems on that year atv. If the 4X4 indicator light comes on and stays on then likely you have power to the hubs unless there is a break in one of the wires. Double check at the circuit board under the tank cowling, you should have 12 volts to grey wires when in gear and the switch engaged. If you dont then the problem is not with your hubs. The shifter has a switch inside that has caused lots of grief
