Default Noise in front end-help needed

After a short drive out a road I noticed a noise some where in the front end.It is not a constant noise just a clicking sound from time to time.I have a 1999-500 magnum with 1000 miles. After getting home I put the back end of the bike up on a jack stand and began turning the tires looking for u-joint problems.Everything seemed ok until i started the bike and started spinning the tires in forward then reverse. After a few tries i could not get the bike to make the noise so i placed the bike in forward and began to accelerate the bike. After the bike was about half throttle something happened to the left front wheel and it engaged and started to spin(only the left-the 4wd selector switch was still in the off position)---What would cause this and could this be the noise i heard while drivind]g around??

ps.please if you try this have the front end clear of the ground too...I almost had a third door in my garage

Sometimes when you have the wheels off the ground the 4wd will automatically engage at certain points. Because of the design of the system with no traction on any tires it is possible, so I don't think that is anything to worry about, the clicking could be low oil in the front gearcase or an internal problem.

I use the polaris hub fluid, it's 3.50 at my dealer with an application nozzle.. this
is enough to do both sides and have some left.. I do it every year for
maintenace..like was also mentioned, type f tranny fluid... your 4 year old
machine with 1000 miles should have already had the hub fluid changed probably
2-3 times..

If it just a clicking sound that comes and goes it could be the brake shoes are catching. Next time it happens while riding apply the brakes and see if it goes away my sportsman does this. It gets annoying quick, I've heard that the factory brakes are known for this.....
