Default ground clearance - sprocket vs. shaft

In reference to smaller cc spot quads, for example Blaster (sprocket) vs. 250ex (shaft) how much of a difference does the rear ground clearance come into play when doing typical woods trail riding. Of course, also consider the common low spot rutted mud holes and the fact that a lot of heavy 4x4 atvs also use these same trails. I do not have a quad yet, and come from a 2 wheeled background and am used to a foot of ground clearance. I just want some opinions, the chain driven quads look so low under the sprocket and disc.

The shaft drive usually does provide better clearance. It can take the occasional scrape or rock bouncing off of it. They are almost bulletproof. I have messed up a few chain gaurds on the rocks, you just have to pick better lines.
