Ryex, a 10mph swing is a huge window for an estimation. 10mph is a HUGE difference in speed on two quad riding next to each other. My Baja X does 82mph with my gearing, for me to go 92mph would be a very large jump in speed not to mention the pucker factor of actually riding that fast. A Z-400 will go around 71mph. A stock 400ex will go around 66mph. For the performance of a Z-400 you will need a full pipe, high compression piston, larger carb, K$N filter. This is due to the EX being air-cooled. All of those mods for only 6mph at a cost of around $1200 without labor is $200 for every mph seems kind of steep.

Cop, air-cooled versus liquid cooling has absolutley nothing to do with top speed. All liquid cooling does is help maintain the power that the engine produces by keeping a lower operating temperature. Top speed is more of a factor of gearing and where these engines produce their power. The 400ex is a torque monster that putters out at high rpms. Not good for drag racing (but a great trail machine). What people don't seem to understand is when you gain top end, you tend to give up some low end (and vice-versa). It's a question of what you want out of your bike.

Raptorlegs, you just made my point for me. Without liquid cooling you need an engine to make even more power to make up for the loss of power due to a higher operating temp. If the EX had liquid cooling it wouldn't need as many mods to just catch up to the Z-400. When the machine is just started it might make as much power, but after riding a while the power of the air-cooled machine tends to drop.

In regard to $200/ Mph: yep those last few Mph are very expensive in any sport application, so is shaving weight...ounces and grams get real expensive. Horsepower is expensive too.
All of those pursuits are addictive and nothing is free.
So the moral of the story is...be aware of what your doing in your quest for fun.
I have spent considerable $$$ chasing my hobbies....speed,HP,MPH,light weight, shine, smiles ETC...
Oh yeah, pretty girls are expensive too!

Yes, but I'd argue that depends on riding conditions. On a cloudy 60 degree day, there is no benefit to liquid cooling under normal riding conditions. On a sunny 90 degree day, there is a huge advantage with extended riding time.
