Default Suspension setups - general question?

Its been a long time since I rode quads (12 years), I've just got a GasGas450 and started to ride some MX tracks.

In general terms how should I set the the shocks (rebound and stiffness) if the ground is hard/bumpy or soft. Just some general tips so I can start to experiment.

Thanks...

Start with the proper ride height (sag), then incremantally increase your compression and rebound damping to fine tune the ride.
