have a BIG problem
#1
alright, so i was riding on sunday, and i turned the bike off after riding pretty hard. i went to kick it and the kicker was locked up. i looked down at my sightglass for the oil and the thing was empty. i figure the piston is locked up. i changed the oil on saturday and everything is tight. i pulled the drain plug out after it locked up and barely any came out. the drain plug was tight. i am using the amsoil 0w-40 synthetic oil, same as i always use. does honda cover this under warrantee? i dont understand what could have happened. the oil did not leak out. by the way it is a TRX 450r 05'. please help.

if you lost the oil due to something you di,then no your not going to get honda to cover it,i'm not sure what honda offers as far as warranty on the 450r but i'm quite sure its only 90 days, after that your on your own,,,,,,

well, seeing as how u used a WINTER oil in the summer, i assume it got burnt off. i dont know much about chemicals and whatnot, but i know that oil gets more fluid (i think thats the right term) when it gets hot. winter oil is already very fluid and when it gets realy hot, it becomes like water. so it probible got passed the rindds and got burnt off.
im not sure though and im probibly wrong, so dont harp on me

Which Amsoil product were you running??? Was it AFF (the only motorcycle specific oil I found that was 0W40)??? I looked at their web site and it says, "Broad viscosity range makes it excellent for use in both hot and cold temperature extremes". Not sure I agree with that statement, although at 70 degrees you should have been fine.
In your climate, I would run something like 5W30 in winter and 10W40 in summer.

Any ZERO weight oil is a bit too thin for summer in an ATV. Especially in a race machine that you were probably riding very hard.
What does your manual call for? Although it's thin I don't know if your engine tolerances are broad enough to burn off a ZERO weight oil.
I'm running 10w40 Amsoil in my KFX and thus far it's been fine although at high temp it is pretty thin compared to the Yamalube 10w40 I run in my Wife's Warrior. I would not want to go any thiner than the 10w40 in my KFX for summer.
If your manual says you can use 0w40 I don't see how you burned it off, it must have leaked out somewhere.
