Default HELP! quad wont run

Okay, my 87 250x was running great, but it was ticking more than I like, so I thought valves. So I tryed to do valves on my own. I got it all set up and ready to go, with the engine at TDC, like the manual says. Well, when its like that, all the rocker arms are tight and you cant do anything as far as adjusting goes. Soooooooooo, i got it to where the exhaust rocker arms were loose, and did those, and tryed to get the back ones to where they were loose, but it never happend. So i just screwed around with it. I put it back together, tryed to kick start it....nothin. So, we towed it behind my dads quad to pop start it, and when it would start, it wouldnt stay on unless it was pinned. Any ideas?

Default HELP! quad wont run

Okay, I just read what I wrote, and its not really clear. lol. Sorry, I was on my way out the door when I put this up. I fiddled around with things a little more, and was able to get it to run and ride, for the most part, BUT, when i try to downshift, it stalls out. It didn't do it at first, but once I really got on the gas it did, and to top it all off, the top of the engine was smoking. Burnt valve(s)? God I hope not. Any haelp would be appreciated, as I'm trying to sell this $hitbox.
