One quad that everyone always forgets about is the Suzuki lt500r quadzilla. This is the fastest quad of them all. But they were only made for a few years and have terrible reliability problems. I think that only about 10% of them ever worked right. But when they do run. They make a Banshee look stupid.
Gee, I wonder why they couldn't get them to work right. Let's put double the motor in the same size frame. I can't figure out why the machine vibrates so much and falls apart.
Cool idea though. Let's see them bring it back.

cstark,
The LT500R QuadZilla frame is much larger than a LT250R frame. By at least 40-50% larger. I have ridden both.
The LT500r is a great sand machine, but youd be hard pressed to get it to do anything else. Does this still count as a high-performance machine? Remember everybody, it all depends on what type of riding conditions constitutes needing high performance. I have a Lt 250r that is great in many situations, but would I go places a Sportsman 400 4x4 would go? No, so in this case it should be considered a low performance machine, while the SP is considered high performance.
i just got my LT rebuilt, so Im going to take it to the track test its high performance capabilities!(IT does not like to hear me call it low performance! HEHE)

Have a good weekend,

RoostKing...

Hey, I didn't know that it was a larger frame. I've never seen one. Thanks for clearing that up.

cstark,
Imagine driving a tractor, that will give you a feel for the Quadzilla! These machines are just huge, with a corresponding turning radius. But like you say, they are bad machines. I have seen a buddy come out of sand washouts that would not be attempted on a banshee. (He had his that day, but would not do it. He did climb it on the QuadZilla though.) I considered buying a Quadzilla, but i like more than just dunes..

Later,

I agree with 86atc250r. I have drag raced the scrambler 400 several times with different riders and whether we were on dirt or in the sand, stock tires or paddles, the scrambler never even got close in the quarter mile, and one of the scramblers had a racing pipe and a clutch kit. And I don't think it is me cause I am by far not the best rider but I can hold my own. 400ex rules.

OK guys, here's an honest opinion, from an honest Sport owner...out of the box they are NOT what I would consider a high performance machine. No if's, and's, or but's about it. As much as I would love to say the it was, it's just not. They're too heavy and poorly suspended.

Yes, you can build them up very well (apparently 86ATC250R has yet to come accross one ), and make them into a high performance rocket, but I can do the same to an LT80 also.

cstark I'm gonna have to dissagree with your point about the auto tranny being a contributing factor in the equasion. Do you consider the Pilot 400 an high performance ATV? The CVT has its own class in professional road racing, where they are running 200+ HP motors with it, in 2000LB cars! They certainly aren't trying to shave weight with it.

TRX430, thanks for the compliment about my ride.

A400L, I respect your opinion totally. I know that your machine is one to beat. The only reason that I said that a manual tranny is nessesary in a high performance quad is for complete control. The auto is more of a user friendly option than a high performance one. I'm sure out there in the world, there is an application for an auto in the high performance catagory. But think about it for a minute. Quads came from motorcycles. And from there they advanced. But I don't see any high performance race bikes with auto trannies. And they have been around for a lot longer than quads.
But you hit the nail right on the head when saying anything can be made into a high performance machine with enough time and money.
