Ever rode a Polaris with a clutch mod and a pipe. It will rip your arms off! As for the matience thing, I do more maintense on my 400EX than my 250R or my old Blaster. Go figure!

Ranger,
I'll have to argue on the 4 stroke reliabilty. I havent had any problems with my 2 stoke Trailblazer all it needs is gas and oil. And it starts in the cold every time thats one thing 4 stokes are not good at. And when its time to rebuild the 4 stroke there is more parts to replace like cam, valves, timing chain, valve guides, theres alot more bearings. The 2 stoke is much simpler when it needs rebuilt. Also you can get more power out of the 2 stroke easier if you want the same out of the 4 stroke you have to spend alot more money. So for me I'm stickin with my 2 stroke. You can have your 4 stroke but I'm telling you that alot of that stuff about 2 strokes being unreliable is untrue.

As for the maintenance question, all that really wears out in a two-stroke are the rings and piston. Not too big a deal to change out / punch out. If I put more than a hundred hours a year on it, that'll be pushing it. The Honda 300EX has been around for more than 12 years, that means that the technology is even older than that..... and Honda doesn't update its quads very often.

i also have to recommend the 300ex. one reason the transmmisions on polaris are a hassle to work on. my friend broke the belt on his 425 magnum and it locked the whole engine up. he also had to buy to cams for it before he sold it. and guess what he bought a brand new 300ex and has had no problems at all. and the thing about honda not upgrading their quads thats because they are proven and last for ever.

I own both a 300ex and a polaris Sport400L. And i would more than likely go w/ the sport if it was not for those DAMN MCPHERSON stuts . THOSE SUCK! the 300ex's suspension is great, and it has a lower center of gravity for those tight trails. Plus when i ride the auto sport, i get board w/ just cruising around, not shifting. So i would prob have to hand it to the 300ex

I've got a '93 300ex, still runs like a champ. It's taken some serious beatings. My buddy's '97 Scrambler 400 took the same beatings, and blew up on him. And if you want to talk jumping prowess, the 400 compared to the 300 is like jumping with a couch strapped to your a$$. My buddy had all those pipes and $hit on his Scrambler, and the only place he could still beat me was a straightaway. That fat, topheavy 400 couldn't hack it on the technical stuff, cornering, etc. Wait, he could get me in the mud, too. Then his front drive broke, and I had to pull that thing out. It takes a little longer to get a real understanding of the manual transmission, but in the end it adds to the performance. Ask yourself why are all race vehicles manual tranny's? The driver likes to have the option of what gear he is in. Plus, the automatic tranny is heavy, and it costs power to the ground.

Also check the papers and ads for machines, and compare years and prices. Polaris loses value real quick. My buddy sold his machine 1 year after new later for $3000, got a banshee. I sold a year-old Honda and only lost $1000 off sticker price.
