I'm looking for opinions( and you all have them...), I'm in the market for another quad, and want a sport-type 2X4 unit, I've narrowed it to either a Honda TRX 300EX, of a Polaris 400 Scrambler. The woods and logging road riding that I do requires a reverse gear so the "true sport quads" are out. I don't feel like having to push a quad up hill around trees, over logs, etc... You get my point.... Which ever one I get will get a pipe, K & N, Jet Kit, basic bolt on speed equipment. Right now I have a 99 TRX300FW, and it is DEFINATELY NOT A SPORT QUAD... The thing steers like a piano... But, it's perfect for the hunting camp..
Thanks for the Opinions,
Scott

I would say..Polaris all the way.

The big plus..AUTO! Trail riding is so much more enjoyable when you don't have to shift!

Plus the 400 has a lot more power. 2-stroke..easier for 'bolt on' power. Get yourself a RCR kit and you'll be set!

I agree, you will be much better served with the Scrambler. More power, speed, easier reverse access, more suspension and frankly more of everything for about the same price.

Go with the Scrambler. Now are you looking at the Scrambler 2x4 or the Scrambler 400 4x4? Do you plan to do any mudding or any other rough terrain riding? If so the 4x4 is a pretty good deal for sure. Either way the 400's are the better choice I think.

p.s you can really hop up the 400's. Ever see a 4x4 Scrambler with paddles on all four wheels? Pretty cool!.

the 300ex is a great machine! however the 400 is really comfortable and easy to drive. plus the extra height allows u to croos more logs and creeks and mud easier

I would also choose the Scrambler the modification possibilities are awesome for it. Also I think 2-srokes are easier to work on because they have less parts and reliable too. If you are going to get in any mud you will deffinately want the Scrambler the 300EX is not made for mud and does very poorly in it.

The place that I ride is the hunting camp during the off season. The mud isn't bad after spring. Iwas definately going to buy a 2 wheel drive quad. I was looking at an FMF pipe and silencer, clutch kit, K&N air filter, Jet Kit, and possibly bump the compression with a billet cylinder head and change the carburetor, but the head and carb aren't immediate mods. Anything that I'm forgetting?

If you do get the Scrambler 2WD I'd look into other pipes than FMF, like RCR or HPD (makers of proven Polaris pipes). With the 400 an air box mod, new filter, some light clutch tweaking will do wonders to it. Best of all Ritter includes all the necessary parts in hie Stage 1 kit ($325). Yes, a new carb and billet head will also make big improvements too.

This is the most positive Polaris thread yet! I too recommend the Polaris. It will esily get over those logs that you talk of. There is nothing better for wide open trails that punhin the gas and lettin 400cc of 2-stroke man hood fly. I don't think that mad sense

All of you have good points here, the 400 is a good quad. but you wanted opinions so i will give them to you. I think the Honda is going to be the ride of your choice, number one reason is the reliability, the 400 is a 2 stroke, which means more maintence and possible rebuilds. The EX is a thumper and they have been making this quad since 1986-1987, that is when they started 250X, dont argue with me on this one, the 300Ex will outlast the 400 by a long shot, and still hold its resale value. and when we are talking transmissons here, shifting is sweet and more fun than punching the throttle, i have ridden a scrambler, nice but not fun on trails, mud? yes fun. go with the Honda, i guaruntee you will love it to death.
