300EX or Polaris400 Scrambler for open woods?
#21
I used to be a die hard Honda 4 stroke rider but I switched to Polaris for the POWER! There is no substitute for cubic inches. Put an RCR stage kit on a 2X4 Scrambler 400 and your still spending less than a 300EX with no mods. So you got to ask yourself what would make you happier, 16 HP 300EX,
or 46 HP Scrambler?

CaptNemo,
I think we are comparing two completely different quads.
The Polaris is faster but it's also automatic, with a very good variable transmission though. And if you want you can make the Scrambler even faster with a few mods without spending much money.
The suspension on the 2000 Scramble has no comparison what so ever with the one on the 300EX. It's a way lot better.
Nevertheless, you may not like the automatic transmission or maybe you prefer to ride a four stroke.
So my suggestion is for you to try both machines and then decide.
Another thing: Reliability is not an issue on those machines. Both are very good.
Choose the one you like the most.

I own a Scrambler 500 4x4 and if the 2 stroke is as sanppy as I've heard, then you should definitely go with it. The rest of the 500 is identicle to the 400 except for the 4x4 and I am verrrrrrry satisfied with my machine.

I'll have to go against the majority here and say to go for the 300EX. I ride with both a 400 and 250 polaris and they seem too heavy to have too much fun. I can toast the 250, and run side by side with the 400 with my stock 300. I've also heard and seen too many horror stories about maintence and repairs on the polaris, but they have been getting better lately.

Both the Sport and 300 ex are fun machines to ride. I prefer the Honda mainly because of the weight difference, also, the 300ex feels much lighter (when riding) than it really is. The 400 will flat out smoke a stock 300ex in a drag race, so it kind of depends on what you like. If you like to rip fast down fire roads, go with the 400. If you like to jump or ride wheelies for ever, get the 300. Anybody that thinks a 2-stroke isn't high maintainence, will learn what a death rattle leads to very soon.

I must say that I too sometimes enjoy shifting. But lets get real here. Clutching and shifting sucks when the going gets rough.
MOSES IS JUST PISSED CAUSE HE GETS ROOSTED ON BY THE 400. The 400 is much better for what you want to do. Lets face it, the 400 dominates in that domain and is the fastest of the two.
I have to admit the stock struts and extra 100LBS suck. But, I'D replace the coils and leave the flyin' to birds.
The thing I hate most about the 400 is the seat height. It would feel more stable with the top of the seat where the plastic ends now and a little lower floorboards.
Thats my 2-cents....400 #1 HERE, NO CONTEST.
