would these atv's be bad for trail riding

For trail riding you can't beat IRS. I love going over the stuff when my SRA buddies are getting hung up or listening to BANG when their skid plates kit rocks and suck their forward momentum.
The raptor may have it in the dunes for dune carving but for trails and open desert the 700xx is a-w-s-o-m-e.

"I will most likely be riding on the open trail that are on forest ground. and there is a trail near my house that I ride on quite a bit where I climb hills"
Doesn't sound like he really needs a 400, the trails don't sound to tight or technical.
He would probably be best with a 450....they are fast and really fun. A 700 would also be fine.

yeah thanks for the help guys. I also go riding around the lake where I live there is like a track that i ride on in the sand. I would kind of like a sport atv that has reverse. so that's why I was looking at the 700xx? does the lt-400 have reverse? thanks.

Yea the z400 has reverse. Man I must say I am very jelous, it sounds liek you have it made; trails around your house everywhere, nice hills, sand track, and you even ride your qaud to work thats just awsome.

yeah i'm pretty lucky. the town I live in just past the law last year that you can use your atv in town for short trips and stuff like that you just have to have some sort of flag on your atv. so it's pretty sweet in the summer. to be able to do that. and I only live about blocks away from where I work so it's cool. so I think that the 700xx would excel and be a good all around for the types of riding that I do wouldn't it?

Yeah with the bigger quads you really can't use all the power, it's sorta like buying a Ferrari or Lambo when you live in the middle of New York City, do you get where we're comin from?<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Originally posted by: reconranger
First off, don't get sucked in by the number "700"! People see that big displacement, and figure it must be some kind of wonder machine.....
The best tight trail quads of all time are the Honda 400EX and its little brother the 300EX. The Suzuki Z400 is a great choice for faster more open trails. The extra cc's of a Raptor 700 are just wasted in the really tight stuff, but it is good for faster more open trails and wide open country.
The 700XX is a weird machine, and not at all the all-arounder that the Raptor 700 is. Be sure you research it carefully, before you spend any money! It is best suited for rocky, rutted, eastern trails. And...it's about 100 pounds to heavy for anything that can truthfully be called a "sport" quad.</end quote></div>

yeah I can understand that. and for what I do a 400-450 would probably be plenty of power. I'm going to rejet the carb and put a fmf muffler on my 250ex and see what happens if I like it i might just stay with my 250 for a while longer. I just got my six pack rack built for it today. so I'll see what happens when I do my two mods. and will keep looking for a 400-450 sport quad. thanks guys.

Well the Raptor is in league all of its own. The only quad IMO that come close into the same category for all around machine along with the Raptor would be the Z400! I ride some of the tightest, rockiest trails in the Country here in Co and the Raptor can take on any terrain/trail thrown at it. Ya you can find Machine that have better ground clearance or ones that are faster or ones that are lighter whatever but you will NOT find a better all around performer. Owning a 700 is not just about speed as the name might suggest it can also mean big torque something the 400 class quad will never come close to. If you come to a steep rock face throw her in fist and idle over rocks. The way I look at is the 700 is the locomotive of the Sport quad class not the Ferrari!
It all depends on how you wanna use it and with a few mods the Raptor is capable of handling it.
The 400EX used to be the king of versatility but as everything goes it must put its #1 trophy on the shelf to collect dust as there is a new king in town!
One thing to add to my opinion and I highly recommend. If you can afford to, no matter what you buy do yourself a favor and by one with EFI you will appreciate it in the long run!
