Z400 Carb problem - need help
#1
I think I have a small problem with the Z. Today we transported the bike in the back of the truck standing up on the rear grab bar. When we unloaded and went to start it, no dice. Cranked and cranked with no luck. I changed the plug, still no luck. I noted a STRONG smell of gas so I pulled the fuel line off and cranked it a bunch of times and it roared to life. Now here is the weird thing. It ran and would idle, but when I was riding it and would be on the gas then try to let it coast, it would die. It would do this with the clutch in or out it did not matter. If I would keep the revs up it would be fine as long as I let it go to idle slowly - then it would idle. Any idea what the heck is wrong? Something sticking maybe????? I think my buddy (where the bike is stored) left it on "prime" for a few weeks (accident). I also noticed that the oil had gas in it so I quit riding and am going to change that ASAP (how bad is that - it is still oilly but you can tell it is thined down).
Thanks for all the info!!!

One day my bike had the same problem with running. I drained the gas, and cleaned the carb with carb cleaner real good, and cleaned the filter and plug. No more problem. I think I just had bad gas. Which if your bike had been sitting a while in between rides, you might have gotten some moisture in the tank. Just a thought.

That is a good point, I already drained the entire tank, will put another new plug in, and gumout the carb and see if that helps. SOrt of weird, NEVER had a problem before just showed up.
Did U ever transport it standing up? I sure would not recommend it after how bad mine flooded. I swore I read somewhere you could do it but it did not work out too well for me...

Kracker-The Z has a vaccuum whivh allows you to leave the fuel petcock on ON at all times without running gas to the carb.
Code54- You smelled gas because when the bike is in that position, fuel runs from the float bowl of the carb to the airbox. Whenever I have my bike in that position I either drain the carb, or take the air filter off and shove a clean rag into the boot. Not sure what your problem is but if I were you, I would not leave the Z standing like that for a long period of time. May not hurt it, but not worth the risk of something going wrong IMHO.

Thats for sure, the oil is mixed with gas pretty bad. The funny thing is we only transported it that way for about 10 miles. I am thinking hard about putting a normal cut off valve in the fuel line after the factory one so that the problem will be sovled. The only reason is when we haul the 2 bikes we can fit them in one truck if I stand mine up (and Suzuki claims you can..... :-) Oh well hopefully everyone learns from this and it helps someone else out.....

I have transported my Z standing up several times and the only problem I had was fuel coming out of the vent hose, but I think this was because the tank was very full. I think that in the owners it gives instructions for transporting it standing up. Definitely change the oil before riding again, if you haven't run the engine very much with the gas in the oil it should be okay. Is the idle adjustment too low? If you haven't checked it that could be your problem, (hopefully). Good Luck!
